Frances was a seamstress by trade and passed her exquisite skills along to Mary Ann. Well, except for the time I let my grandmother, Frances, make my prom dress…

The FIT Experience

Mary Ann briefly attended The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City but gave up her dreams as a designer when she was told her design skills were best utilized as a milliner. A Life of Style: Mary Ann’s Fashion and Confidence

She never gave up on style, however, and was always well dressed and well-coiffed. She loved to model for the camera with the clothes she sewed herself and was a willing model for her brother’s photography practice.

When she passed, she didn’t leave instructions for how she would like to be dressed, so my sister and I were tasked with finding an outfit. In a fit of grief and hilarity, we mused in the lingerie department of Macy’s as to the type of underwear she would have approved of and if she really needed them. I’ll never tell what we decided, but I’m sure she is quite happy in heaven.
